A travel companion we want to part ways with as soon as possible.

Chances are that when you land in Beijing, the time difference from where you departed will be significant. I’m not sure if you’ve ever experienced this disturbance— I have, several times— and I wouldn’t recommend it. While it’s easy to understand what causes jet lag, combating it isn’t as simple. The goal of this article is to share some tricks I like to use to help manage it.

Adapt your habits to the destination’s time: The first thing you should do is change the time on your watch and other devices as soon as you’re on the plane to Beijing. This helps you mentally enter the destination’s time zone before you arrive. And, of course, you need to follow your watch’s schedule: if it shows it’s time to sleep, then you’ll need to make the effort.

No alcohol: Alcohol affects the quality of your sleep, and if you get little rest on the plane (when your watch says you should be sleeping) and it’s poor quality, jet lag is guaranteed.

Push through: Another recommendation, especially for the first day, is to resist the urge to sleep until it’s the time you’d normally go to bed. Or the opposite— if you arrive late and it’s time to sleep, you know what to do: don’t fight it.
